Alamosa Standout | Kalvin Valdez

We know round 1 of the RMRA series’s is old news, but when they give us 4 weeks off between races we give ourselves permission to keep talking about it till the next gate drop. Speaking of, we’re ecstatic for round 2 at imi this weekend. Be sure to check out our Media packages and sign up for some sweet videos and photos of you rippin’ this weekend.

As we rolled into Alamosa for the season opener, we had no idea what to expect, was the turnout going to be good ( it was decent) did we have to get tested for The Corona before we entered? ( thank god we didn’t) Will there be any fights over Numbers ( there was).

Practice got underway and we couldn’t help but notice a kid rippin during the first 85cc practice of the day. Who is this kid sporting the number 66 with that dope style, and why the hell does he look so familiar? Quickly we realized it was Kalvin Valdez from Brighton Colorado. Kalvin was one of those heavy hitters in the 50cc class back in the day. Unfortunately, back to back injury’s prevented Kalvin from racing much the last two and half years, but we were happy to see him healthy and back to battling in 2020. Although he didn’t end up on the top step of the podium, Alamosa treated Kalvin well, finishing the weekend with a 6th overall in the Jr. mini 9-11 class and an 8th overall in the open mini 9-12 class. We must mention, his starts were on point!

Trying our hardest to practice social distancing, We put our mask’s on and sat down with Kalvin over Instagram to ask him a few questions about his first weekend back –

Emx:

it’s been awhile since we’ve seen the 66 line up at the gate. What have you’ve been up to. How old are you these day’s?

Kv:

Just finished up with physical therapy then COVID came so I’ve just been riding, mountain biking, skateboarding. And I’m 12 years old.

Emx:

We’re glad to here you’re all healed up and back to having fun. So let’s talk about Alamosa, how did it go for you?

Kv:

It was good had a couple crashes, had a hole shot one Moto and lead the race for a while. I defiantly think I had the speed, but I need to work on my conditioning. Overall I think it was a great weekend.

Emx:

Endurance is key, especially on a track like that. Track Looked to be one of the roughest season openers we’ve ever witnessed, what were your thoughts on the track?

KV:

It was rough!! It was a crazy first race to come back to. I love sand so it was so much fun. Definitely my favorite track in Colorado!! The last Moto every corner there was breaking bumps so big they turned into rollers.

Emx:

First time riding there and already your new favorite track! Hopefully the series visits there more often. It’s a short season, what are some of your goals? Will we be seeing you at any of the few supercross races this summer? Or are you just going to stick with Motocross?

KV:

Yeah it would be sick if there was another race there. It would be nice if I ended the series with a few overalls. The main thing is to finish off healthy. I haven’t raced Supercross on an 85 or even a 65 so it would definitely fun to race some Supercross.

Emx:

Right on man, Those are some solid goals, it would be awesome to see you win some races again. Before I let you go, is there anyone you would like to thank?

Kv:

I would like to thank my whole family, Tyler Johnson and everybody at Elevated Mx for letting me have this opportunity, Troy lee designs, Dunlop, Roost Mx, Renthal, Arai, Alpinestars, Von Zipper, Pro circuit, and Yamaha for making the best bikes out there!!

Emx:

Thank you dude! Good job last weekend!
