TEXAS MX SHOOTOUT | UNDERGROUND MX

Last weekend, all three regions came together at Underground MX for the Texas Statewide Championship Series’s Regional Shootout. With over 750 entries packed into two full days of racing, it’s tough to put into words just how legendary the weekend was. But if there’s one thing we can say for sure, it’s that it left us wanting more weekends exactly like this.

The track was no joke, easily one of the toughest we’ve seen all season. Deep ruts, huge jumps, and every challenge you could ask for, this place had it all. With the two-day format, first motos went down Saturday and the seconds wrapped up Sunday. At first, we weren’t sure about the setup since we’re used to running the little bikes on Saturday, big bikes Sunday, but this format definitely proved it has its place.

As far as the racing goes. There were battles all day both days. Some classes lined up with as many as forty-one riders, and with sixty-six gate drops in total, it’s safe to say nobody left the weekend without something worth talking about.

Darren Pine dominated with 1-1 finishes in both Schoolboy 2 and 250 B. A collision with another rider in the first 450 B moto, however, cost him the overall in that class.

250 / 450 C

Talon Becerra Goes Perfect: Double Holeshots, Double Wins in 250C

Opening the shootout, the 250 C Class was the first to drop the gate. With forty-one entries—the largest of the program—the class sent a wall of novice riders charging into turn one. Talon Becerra came out swinging, grabbing the holeshot with Talon Trahan, George Cosenza, and the rest of the field in tow.

By lap two, Cosenza slipped past Trahan for second, with Stone Hudman following shortly after. Out front, Becerra stretched his lead to about three seconds by the time the white flag waved, carrying that momentum to the moto one win. Cosenza held off late pressure from Hudman to secure second, while Trahan and Mason Wright rounded out the top five.

In moto two, Becerra was untouchable once again, leading wire-to-wire for a clean sweep. Cosenza locked down another second-place finish, with Trahan in third and Wright in fourth. Hudman, who had finished third in Saturday’s opener, did not start on Sunday, cutting his weekend short.

Late charge gives George Cosenza the win over Jaxon Nelson in first 450 C moto.

The opening 450 C moto featured an epic finish between Jaxon Nelson and George Cosenza. Nelson controlled the pace for most of the race, but in the final stretch, Cosenza carried serious speed through the closing section and made a decisive pass at the finish line to steal the victory.

George Cosenza backed it up with the win in moto two, while Jaxon Nelson secured another solid second. Nate Millsap found extra speed and improved on his first-moto, grabbing third this time around. When the points were tallied, the overall top five for the day went to Cosenza, Nelson, Millsap, James Kuhlman, and Talon Trahan. Shoutout to Dax McLain as well—he bounced back strong in the second moto, finishing 13th after a tough 26th-place ride on Saturday.

SUPERMINI 12-16

The Supermini 12–16 class was absolutely stacked at this weekend’s Shootout. Many of these riders had just come off Loretta Lynn’s last month, and we saw some Loretta-level battles in both motos. To put it in perspective, the top twenty riders all finished in different positions between moto one and moto two. The first rider to post the same score in both was Colt Waldburger, who went 21–21 for 21st overall.

Marcus Trujillo jumped out front early in moto one, but Jake Willis and Loretta Lynn’s champ Mayla Herrick quickly moved past. The two went head-to-head until a costly mistake dropped Herrick to the ground. Willis stayed smooth to take the win, with Elliott Bowsher in second and Jaxson Bailey third. Herrick charged hard, but could only climb to 12th.

The second moto turned out to be the battle of the day. Despite starting with the 12th gate pick, Mayla Herrick ripped the holeshot and quickly found herself locked in a duel with Jake Willis. The two went bar-to-bar nearly the entire race, with Willis making a late pass on the final lap. But Herrick fought back and reclaimed the lead before the checkers, grabbing the moto two win. Behind them, Elliott Bowsher and Jaxon Bailey were charging hard as well, keeping the pressure on and never far off the leaders.

Jake Willis went 1-2 to take the overall win, with Elliott Bowsher posting 2-3 for second. Jaxson Bailey finished 3-4 for third overall, Marcus Trujillo went 4-5 to claim fourth, and Layne Flesche rounded out the top five with 5-6 finishes. Mayla Herrick, despite her Moto 2 win, scored 12-1 to land sixth overall.

MINI-E 4-6

The youngsters were on the watts? this weekend, flying around the rough Underground track on their silent machines. Leading the charge was the #77 of Lincoln Mash, who controlled the first moto from start to finish. While Lincoln was in another zip code up front, Nathan Martins and Ares Chester went bar-to-bar all the way to the checkered flag. When it was all said and done, the top three shook out as Lincoln Mash, Nathan Martins, and Ares Chester.

In the second moto, Lincoln once again ripped the holeshot, with Mason Rice, Ares Chester, Holt Putman, and Malcolm Gallagher hot on his heels as they charged into lap two. Just before lap three, Rice went down hard and was forced to retire with a bike issue, shuffling the running order. Out front, Lincoln stayed smooth and in control, cruising to another convincing win. Behind him, Bodie Burke, Chester, Gallagher, and Putman rounded out a hard-fought top five.

51cc 7-8

The 51cc 7–8 class kicked off with Levi Morrell snagging the holeshot, trailed by Laken Mauldin, Bodie Roberts, and Knox Pomeroy. Pomeroy quickly took over the lead, but on lap two Kellen Cooper charged into second and began closing in.

Just as Pomeroy looked set for the win, a tangle with a lapped rider took him down, handing Cooper the lead. Cooper held strong to take the moto one victory, while Pomeroy fought back to finish third behind Bodie Roberts.

Moto two saw Levi Morrell grab another holeshot (nice work!) with strong starts from Tucker Sharp, Bodie Roberts, and Laken Mauldin. Out front, Kellen Cooper and Knox Pomeroy battled early, but a mistake from Pomeroy allowed Roberts to slip past. The race wrapped up with Cooper taking the win, Roberts in second, and Pomeroy third—an exact repeat of moto one’s results.

COLLEGE BOY 18-24

Matthew Curler returned to the series at Underground and reminded everyone just how talented he is on a motorcycle. In moto one, Cameron Harrison grabbed the early lead over Curler and Ethan Pope, but Curler powered past by lap three and controlled the race from there. The top three stayed tight, and just when it looked like Harrison would secure second, Pope surged at the line to steal the spot, leaving Harrison third. In moto two, Curler jumped out front early and set the pace the entire way, grabbing the overall win for the weekend. Harrison held off Pope this time to claim second overall, with Pope rounding out the podium.

GIRLS VS BOYS

Isn’t it awesome seeing the girls mix it up with the boys? This weekend we watched a few of them go bar-to-bar with the guys, and it was nothing short of awesome.

Shelbie Brittain

Shelbie Brittain took it to the boys this weekend in the 25+ Amateur class, going 1-1 to edge out Tyler Reed, Gavino Rongel, and the rest of the field. She also claimed wins in both Women’s Amateur 12+ motos, as well as the WMX Women’s 25+ class.

Tinley Mccoy

Tinley McCoy went bar-to-bar with the heavy hitters in the Supermini 12–16 class, finishing 11-10 for 11th overall. In the Girls 11–16 division, she was unstoppable—going undefeated with back-to-back moto wins over Paetyn McCleskey and Adriann Spiker, who both put in strong rides. McCoy also lined up in the Women’s Amateur class, where she battled with Shelbie Brittain and came away with a solid second-place finish. All in all, it was a standout weekend for McCoy.

Mayla Herrick

We already mentioned Mayla Herrick’s impressive moto two win in the Supermini class, but she also put together a strong run in Schoolboy 2, going 9-8 for 8th overall. Cracking the top ten in that class is no easy task, so props to her for absolutely killing it this weekend!

FIVE RANDOM BANGERS

Hayes Harrin grabbing the holeshot second moto of 51cc 4-6 class.
Lincoln March with the jump on the P-dub. He would go on to win the first 50cc A/C Limited Moto.
Shannon Tarnow, Dakota Lee, and Charles Orr duking it out in the 65cc 7-9 class. Tarnow held strong for a perfect 1-1 moto scores.
